Even though it’s early days for the Vital Whim blog, the ever-so-intruiging Kaitlin Lange is blasting full-speed ahead, churning out socially-minded yet humorous musings about her new life in Sydney coming from small-town Minnesota. Best described as an anthropological study of herself and fellow travellers, Vital Whim highlights the findings Kaitlin stumbles upon on a daily basis. Her world is driven by an innate curiosity of the human race and the oddities of how people experience travel, so I decided to put my own research-hat on and find out what makes this redhead’s travel personality tick…
Name a place your dying to visit.
One of the top places on my travel “to do” list is Antarctica. Not necessarily the easiest place to get to, I think it would be really interesting to live at one of the research sites for a while. I have this romantic notion that I could count penguin chicks and watch amazing sunsets over the snow. Plus, I would like to be able to prove to myself that I could live in such a desolate place. Then whenever I face any hard landscapes or bad weather in the future I can say, “Psshh, whatever, this is nothing. I lived in Antarctica.”
Name a favourite destination you would go back too.
I would love to go back to Ireland. I travelled there for a couple of weeks a few years ago and it instantly felt comfortable. I don’t know if it is because it is the land of the gingers, but I would love to go do some more exploring.
What’s your plane personality?
Planes are for (a.) meeting other travellers and (b.) reading the guidebook for my destination. If I can’t find someone interesting to talk to on the plane and I am done with the guidebook I revert to: (c.) being antisocial as all get out by marathoning movies or trying to get some sleep.
Best foreign curse word you know?
Crap. I don’t know any foreign curse words. Need to do something about that…
If you could be transported to one place at one time, what would it be and why?
I would like to go back in time and see the first performance of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Ernest.” I would have some elaborate scheme to try and ruin the punchline of the play during intermission but just end up laughing through the whole thing and forgetting my evil plan.
Aside from the basics, which items do you always take away with you?
My travel essentials include pens and notebooks for journaling, a sleep mask, and a little photo album of my friends and family. The last one is always useful to have when you want to share some photos of your life back home but don’t feel comfortable showing off your fancy smartphone or laptop. I have one that easily fits into my pocket.
What kind of luggage do you prefer?
I have always been a roller luggage sort of person until I took my first backpack on my trip to Tanzania. Now, I prefer my backpack because it makes me feel more mobile. I’ll save the roller luggage for when I am rich and famous, then I will be able to afford 5 star hotels and a personal assistant to roll my luggage for me.
