I’ll come right out and say it: The Oyster Inn Waiheke Island is pretty bloody cool. The kitsch guesthouse cum classic-coastal restaurant cum beach-chic shop has an unpretentiously stylish vibe that goes hand-in-hand with laid-back Waiheke Island life, a mere 35 minutes by ferry from Auckland.
From the moment you’re greeted at the ferry terminal by the Inn’s taxicab yellow VW Kombi van, to the minute you’re scoffing your own body-weight in fresh local Oysters at their celebrated restaurant overlooking Oneroa Bay, The Oyster Inn takes pride in the little details that delight!
The Inn has transformed from its humble beginnings as the island’s newspaper office into a well-distilled concoction of design, hospitality and lifestyle. This is shown in the clever way comfort and modernity are prioritised equally to give the spartan rooms a real “lived-in” feel. It was also demonstrated when one of the helpful and chatty staff-members went out of their way to befriend me and to draw me a map with their favourite secret spots on the island (you know who you are) – such warm hospitality, in the truest sense of the word, can’t go unnoticed. But I think above all, what sets this place apart from anywhere else on the island is that The Oyster Inn is just so…easy. It’s sweeping harbour views and three generous guest-rooms with super-soft cotton bed linen, extra-large king beds, under-floor heating, iPod docks, LCD TVs and stylish bath products care of Aesop, make living the chillaxed New Zealand island life a breeze, bro – even if you’re only there for a night!
