What do Roger Moore, Prince Albert of Monaco and Rudolf Nureyev (you know, the Russian Swan Lake dude) have in common? They’ve all stayed at The Nai Harn Hotel property in Phuket over the last two decades. One of them even swam naked in the pool…
It’s safe to say this property has seen some amazing things during its long and illustrious career. But the most amazing of them all has to be its recent Madonna-like reinvention, which saw predecessor The Royal Phuket Yacht Club transform into The Nai Harn Hotel.
The grand old property underwent a mammoth 18-month renovation, which saw the original 80’s timber décor replaced with a white, airy designer style. It reopened in March 2016 to much hype and fanfare – complete with a brand new name and some bliss-inducing changes. Extensive structural and interior renovations were carried out inside the plush rooms and reception during the year and a half, and an architecturally designed rooftop bar and cutting-edge Spa were also added – just in case the property wasn’t cool enough already.
As Phuket’s only ‘Leading Hotel of the World (LHW)’ offering, you’d expect the result to be pretty special. You’d expect something setting the benchmark for luxury on the island. And although the usual five-star bells and whistles apply, it’s The Nai Harn’s unique way of highlighting its amazing location that really stands out and takes your breath away.
Of course, the hotel’s prime position perched on a hill at the west-end of one of the most beautiful and undeveloped bays in Phuket helps. The Andaman Sea, with its glistening water oscillating between evergreen and aquamarine is left, right and centre almost everywhere you look on the property. Each of The Nai Harn’s 130 rooms open up to a spacious balcony overlooking the bay. The pool, the gym, the 2 restaurants and the rooftop bar have overwhelmingly prime vantage points, and have the added bonus of offering fresh and vibrant interiors. Fragrant frangipani trees and bougainvillea flowers dot the property to offset the deep ocean hue, and to remind you of the lush, tropical paradise that surrounds you. Something that seems harder and harder to come by in an ever-urbanised Phuket.
The Hotel’s General Manager, Frank Grassmann, describes it best when he says:
“I don’t want to sound like I’m praising my property only because I work here, but I’ve lived in Phuket for many, many years. I’ve worked in the north, south, east and west of the island, so I know Phuket very well. This is by far the best location. Up here you have just the right distance. You are overlooking everything that’s happening. You see the boats, you see the guests on the beach … There’s so much action going on. But here, where we sit in the hotel, it’s very calm.”
