Ahh, the Stockholm Archipelago, stuff of Scandinavian legend and an absolute must when visiting the city! There are so many reasons to visit these islands surrounding Stockholm, not the least of which is pure, unadulterated solitude. Rent your very own cabin beside the thousands of isles and inlets and just kick-back in your sauna, relax with a wine and let the good times roll. If adventure is your jam, there’s plenty of that in the Stockholm Archipelago. Hop on a boat and explore the nearby islands, take a hike and stumble upon an abundance of wildlife or eat authentic cuisine at award-winning restaurants.
But first thing’s first, where to stay! If you’ve read this blog for long enough you’ll know I’m quite partial to a quaint cabin in the woods or shack by the sea, and there’s certainly no shortage of cute cabins for rent on the 30,000 islands (yes, you heard right) reaching far out into the Baltic Sea. Here’s a few of my favs.
Stockholm Archipelago Cute Cabins For Rent
Sea Cottage
Pictured above
This cabin has graced the pages of architecture magazines worldwide and is the kind of spot by the sea travellers dream of. Don’t be fooled by the too-cool-for-school exterior, there’s no water inside the cabin, so even though it looks amazing you’ll need to be mindful of that if staying here for more than a few nights (especially in the winter). That said, what it lacks in amenities it more than makes up for in design and location. It’s a place to really re-connect with nature! A private jetty and shared boat/sauna is included in price.

Stockholm Archipelago Villa
If you’re looking for an easily accessible holiday on the Archipelago, this cabin is it. You can reach it via car (so no ferry required), and it’s under an hour’s drive from Stockholm city. Due to the cabin’s location on the mainland, there’s no shortage of hikes or wildlife (such as deer, moose, fox and eagles) at your doorstep. Exploration really is this cabin’s middle name – there’s even a secret second World War II fort hidden deep in the forest…

Sandy Beach Converted Workshop
Come one, come all! This old workshop by a sandy beach has undergone a beautiful transformation into a cabin fit for family and friends. The interiors are rustic-chic and the pretty jetty overlooks the water. A small power-boat is included in the price, as is a private sauna on the bridge.

Fejan Canvas Hotel
If Glamping is your jam then these secluded tents perched high above the water in the northern part of the archipelago are perfect for you and your significant other. Offering total seclusion, the luxury bell tents are tastefully decorated with all the cozy stuff – there’s even a small wood fired stove for chilly nights. Included in the price is a DIY dinner that you can cook yourself on a gas muurikka. In the morning a breakfast basket is also delivered to the tent.

How To Get To The Stockholm Archipelago
By far the easiest and most beautiful way to reach the islands is by boat. The main boat operator in the archipelago is Waxholmsbolaget. Located next to Kungsträdgården and Grand Hôtel, Strömkajen is the main harbour of Waxholmsbolaget in Stockholm. The single ticket price depends on your destination and varies between 60-130 SEK. You can plan your trip through the archipelago by using a trip planner available on the Waxholmsbolaget website.
When To Go To The Stockholm Archipelago
While obviously a summer playground, the Archipelago is breathtaking all year round. If you don’t want to deal with snow, then the best months to visit are from April-October. Be mindful that in winter the regularity of ferry routes depends on the weather conditions.
How To Get Around The Stockholm Archipelago
The ferry system around the larger islands is quite extensive, and usually when you stay on the smaller islands you will be provided with a small boat to cruise between islands.
You can get to Stockholm from Oceana, via Singapore, on Singapore Airlines. As it’s a super long trip from down-under it’s worth spending a bit more and upgrading to Singapore Airlines Business Class. You won’t regret it, trust me!

Also, Don’t Miss
Sandhamn Island – Arguably the most glamorous island and home to the Royal Swedish Yacht Club. There’s plenty of sights, restaurants and action in general here so if you crave culture and people then don’t miss it. Once there, you can rent bikes, kayak, or swim – a perfect day trip!
Vaxholm Island – If you’re short on time , this island is located at the start of the Archipelago and can be reached under an hour by ferry. Wander around the quaint town with it’s old architecture, visit Vaxholm fortress and be sure to drop into Vaxholm BnB for lunch and tradional Swedish “Fika”– it’s somewhat of an institution!
