The giant island we call home is riddled with beautiful stretches of sand only a handful of locals know about. I recently published an article highlighting my favourite secret beaches in Australia and thought I’d share some more!
The following are stunning hush hush beaches not yet known to the wider Aussie populous. All you’ll need to find them is a sense of adventure… (oh, and maybe some form of transportation)!
My Favourite Secret Beaches in Australia
Little (little) Salmon Bay, Rottnest Is, WA
Why You’ll Love It:
- As far as Rottnest Island beaches go, this is as secret as you’ll get! Little Little Armstrong Bay is a very tiny rocky inlet that isn’t visible from the road, and if you don’t know where it is you’ll probably end up in Little Salmon Bay next door!
- Spend the day petting Quokkas and basking in absolutely crystal clear water undisturbed by other people.
How To Get There:
- The fastest way to get to the Island is with Rottnest Express, with boats departing from North Fremantle, B Shed and Elizabeth Quay’s Barrack Street Jetty daily.
- Catch the Rottnest Island Explorer Hop On/Hop Off Bus from “The Settlement” main jetty to the Little Salmon Bay bus stop, about 4 km’s into the journey.
- Find the sign to “Little Salmon Bay” beach and turn left. Walk about 70m through unpaved shrub with the cliff-line in sight until you find a foot-worn path leading down toward a sheltered bay below.
Whites Beach, Broken Head NSW
Why You’ll Love It:
- Loose lips sink ships! Or, as the case would have it, loose lips let secret beaches lose a little charm! Nevertheless, Whites Beach is still mostly under-the-radar for most Byron Bay visitors, which might have something to do with the fact the gravel road to get there is a tad treacherous at times!
- Embarking on an off-road adventure is part of the charm of Whites Beach, you’ll feel like Indiana Jones once reaching the steps leading down to the beautiful bay!

How to Get There:
- Head to Broken Head Beach (about a 10-minute drive from Byron Bay) and turn off at Seven Mile Beach Road. The narrow dirt road curves precariously through the protected bushland of Broken Head Nature Reserve and can be slippery after storms – so be careful! Stop at the third curve where the road widens and cars are parked. Follow the steep path down to the beach.

Little Waterloo Bay, Wilson’s Promontory VIC
Why You’ll Love It:
- Pristine and uncrowded, Little Waterloo Bay sits on the eastern, uninhabited side of Wilson’s Prom, away from crowds and holiday-makers.
- A rugged, 300m long bay with a landscape similar to Tassie’s famous Bay of Fires, with huge granite boulders covered in burnt orange lichen and fine white sand backed by steep forested slopes.
- A network of creeks drain into the ocean at the northern tip of the beach which makes for great swimming.
- Camping permitted.

How To Get There:
- Little Waterloo Bay is only accessible by foot via the overnight hike track from Tidal River. It’s about a 22km return hike so make sure you’re prepared. So not only will you be greeted with a beautiful view upon arrival, you’ll also get your Fitbit steps in!

Bittangabee Bay, Ben Boyd National Park, NSW
Why You’ll Love It:
- A tiny, protected bay nestled along a remote stretch of coastline in the Ben Boyd National Park, it offers secluded swimming and fishing in a pristine natural environment.
- Crystal clear aquamarine tinted waters the NSW South Coast is famous for.
- Plenty of shady spots to set up a picnic and enjoy the views with nobody else within cooee.

How To Get There:
- The walk to the beach from the carpark at Bittangabee Bay is about 300 metres. There’s also a plethora or overnight and day hikes to explore Ben Boyd National Park’s 47km of rocky coastline, inland lakes and sheltered inlets.
Blue Pearl Bay, Whitsundays, QLD
Why You’ll love It
- The tiny off-grid beaches skirting Blue Pearl Bay on Hayman Island can only be reached by boat. Grab a tender and anchor yourself in a secluded bay for a real Robinson Crusoe type experience.
- Explore the underwater caves network and scout the stunning coral reef for ‘Priscilla’, the resident giant ‘Maori Wrasse’ fish, who enjoys interacting with swimmers.

How to get there:
- You’ll find this slice of paradise on the north-western side of Hayman Island. Day tours and overnight boats visit Blue Pearl Bay for snorkelling or scuba diving. But remember, if you want a truly unique experience, steer clear of Blue Pearl Bay proper and hunt for the surrounding bays either by foot or private tender.
