I want to talk about US politics as much as I want to talk about taxes. Toto, we’re not in Washington anymore. Actually, we never were. What I do want to focus on, however, is Victoria’s very own glamorous white building known as the Daylesford White House.

A long time favourite of weekend wonderers and design bloggers around the world, the Daylesford White House is located in the Macedon Ranges not 1.5 hours north-east of Melbourne. Designed by Melbourne’s vintage interiors queen Lyn Gardener, owner of popular Empire Vintage in Albert Park,  it is one of those boutique holiday properties that seamlessly mixes vintage and contemporary elements to create a rare blend of industrial, eco-luxe.

Walking up the pathway, past the lush green gardens and through the front door of this unpretentious 1850’s minor’s cottage, you get the feeling that you’ve arrived somewhere pretty special. Initially, you can’t help but dart from room to room ogling all the glorious detail – the French chandelier hanging over the claw-foot bathtub, the cushions made of Union Jack flags and old flour bags on the sofas, the antique drawers filled with suggestions of what to do in the area – and the best thing is, you’ll still be making discoveries at the end of your weekend away.

But it was a long road to restoration, says Gardener…

“The house needed every wall, floorboard and most windows replaced. The four walls are really all that was kept. It had been renovated in the 1980s and for my eyes, ruined. It took months of a great team to bring it back to life and I am just so very proud of it now.

“It has a great feel and as I have now also turned it into accomodation, my guests feel the same. I have filled it to the brim with all my favourite vintage items, from industrial work benches and a claw foot bath to vintage artwork…old leather 1930s club chairs and so on. There is a divine garden room for guests to stay in too that is a pure white, linen filled room, once again filled with character and hand selected one-off items.”

“The place is so loved, not just by me now but all the guests who stay… I am very happy,” she says.

You can stay at this little piece of design heaven by booking online through Stayz here. But you better get in early as it’s loved so much it’s usually booked out 6 months in advance!
